Historic Preservation Component of the Natural Resource Conservation and Historic Preservation Project (NRCHPP)

 

Historic Preservation Component of the Natural Resource Conservation and Historic Preservation Project (NRCHPP) funded by the United Sates Agency for International Development (USAID). The project led to restoration and adaptive re-use of Cape Coast Castle (1653), Elmina Castle (1482), and Fort St. Jago, all designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

 

Project Outcomes:

  • Restoration and adaptive reuse of a Cape Coast Castle, Elimina Casle and Fort St. Jago

  • Training and build the capacity of national institutions responsible for biodiversity conservation, monuments, interpretation and tourism promotion

  • Establishment of Ghana Heritage Conservation Trust (GHCT), as a Ghanaian Trust

  • Endowment of GHCT with $2 Million

  • Hand over the assests and liabilities of the HRCHP Project to GHCT

  • Creation of Cape Cape Coast Historic District and Commission

  • Implement a small grant program targeting historic dwellings, objects, and landscapes

  • Undertake community education and outreach programs including art installations

  • Development of microenterprises within rehabilitated dwellings

  • A guide training and licensing program and established products for guides to sell

  • Landscape improvements and designed sustainable mechanisms for maintenance
